Volunteer Opportunities:
(Check out meeting powerpoints for more updated information)

NICU (Feeders and Growers & Mother/Baby)

Feeders & Growers: Babies that are getting healthier, but still need to work on proper development on the growth charts. These infants have varying medical diagnosis and different needs in their care. As a volunteer, you help nurses care for these babies through bottle feeding and changing, as well as providing the babies with socialization through holding them.

Mother Baby: For mothers who have been discharged from the hospital, but baby needed more NICU time. This is where the baby is still hospitalized in the NICU, but the mother can room-in with her infant to learn how to care for their medical needs. As a volunteer, you help nurses care for these babies through bottle feeding and changing, as well as providing them with socialization through holding them.

Ronald McDonald House

Hang out and play bingo with the kids and families staying at Ronald McDonald house while they are receiving medical treatment, most often at Shriners Burn Hospital. The volunteers role is to help distract them and allow them to just be kids.

Contact our Volunteer Coordinators for more information or if you have any questions!

Baby Box
at UTMB

An education initiative based on a program in Finland, who has the lowest rate of infant mortality in the world. Mothers at UTMB that decide to participate in this free program complete a series of short educational videos, and afterwards receive a box with various items in it that babies might need. The box itself doubles as a safe place for baby to sleep. As a volunteer in this program, you go into the mothers rooms and talk with them about the importance of safe sleeping, and the role Baby Box plays in that.

Pedi Med/Surg & Pedi ICU

Work with the Child Life Specialist on the floor to give certain kids on the floor extra attention. Volunteers will go to the rooms indicated and talk, play games, or do crafts with the kids. The goal is to take their mind off of the fact that they are in the hospital.
